The fan beats faster than a fan can beat. Two ribs snap. Under the crack in the porcelain, half a real face shows for the first time: dark under the eyes, swollen from not sleeping.
I can't stop. Please don't stop either.
Mitsuki lowers her blade. She does not attack.
Don't look. This face is not for anyone to see.
So Mitsuki steps into her dance. Shoulder to shoulder, on her count, one full turn — the only time all night she lets herself be in time with anything.
This one isn't aimed at you.
The cut passes her ear and severs the accelerating clock spinning between them. Every clock in the city stops on the same mark: the first slot in the OUT column. The earliest you are allowed to go home.
I just… wanted to sleep.
The mask breaks along the crack. Her chest rises — her first breath in this tower. Mitsuki catches her, closes the paper fan inch by inch, and fastens the rivet. That small click is the first sound in the tower that leaves an echo.
Sleep. I'll take the next tower.
The fluorescent lights go out floor by floor. For the first time the steel has a top — and one thin line of orange bleeds along its edge. It isn't a clocktower any more. It is only a building.
