Tokyo Tower: The Last Dance

Tokyo Tower · The Shadowless Clocktower

The prisoner at the top of this tower is not a tyrant. She is the one who stopped clocking out, so that no one would ever have to be the last to leave.

The fan beats faster than a fan can beat. Two ribs snap. Under the crack in the porcelain, half a real face shows for the first time: dark under the eyes, swollen from not sleeping.

SHIZUKA
I can't stop. Please don't stop either.

Mitsuki lowers her blade. She does not attack.

SHIZUKA
Don't look. This face is not for anyone to see.

So Mitsuki steps into her dance. Shoulder to shoulder, on her count, one full turn — the only time all night she lets herself be in time with anything.

MITSUKI
This one isn't aimed at you.

The cut passes her ear and severs the accelerating clock spinning between them. Every clock in the city stops on the same mark: the first slot in the OUT column. The earliest you are allowed to go home.

SHIZUKA
I just… wanted to sleep.

The mask breaks along the crack. Her chest rises — her first breath in this tower. Mitsuki catches her, closes the paper fan inch by inch, and fastens the rivet. That small click is the first sound in the tower that leaves an echo.

MITSUKI
Sleep. I'll take the next tower.

The fluorescent lights go out floor by floor. For the first time the steel has a top — and one thin line of orange bleeds along its edge. It isn't a clocktower any more. It is only a building.

The novel behind the game · Being serialised

World of Awakening · Volume One: The Towers

On a single night, five landmark towers are lit by a light that is not human, and over every city a strange planet and an open mouth appear in the sky. The towers are not held by tyrants but by five prisoners trapped in systems they built themselves. Five ordinary people from five cities climb with their own dance and their own martial art, and no victory ends in a death: each one sets a keeper free and turns a tower back into an ordinary building. Every freed tower gives up the ship locked inside it, enough to reach the next tower. However high they fly, the door they can see in the sky stays out of reach.

They built the towers to touch the sky. We climb them to let people out.
